Inside the Chart
By Bryndis Ogmundson, Charts Editor
The Pixies were great, thanks for asking.
Oh, sweet sweet CanCon. The entire top five this month are Canadian. Doesn't that make you feel good? Me too. *sigh* Let's go in for a closer look
The SadiesAt number one, from number sixty-eight, we have Toronto 's most dapper band, The Sadies . Their new album Favourite Colour s has one the hearts of Canadian djs, and rightfully so. The album features old friends like Greg Keelor ( Blue Rodeo ) and Rick White ( Eric's Trip ), and also adds some surprises like Robyn Hitchcock ( Soft Boys ) and Joey Burns ( Calexico ). This one will stick in the top ten for at least another month before slowly dropping out of the top 50, very slowly.
Julie Doiron has claimed number two this month with her new release Goodnight Nobody . This is a comfortable, non-confrontational album from one of Canada 's original indie darlings. Fellow Eric's Trip per Rick White appears on this album as well. Julie DoironHmmmhas anyone ever played six degrees of Rick White before? I bet that would be fun.
The Hidden CamerasPitchfork called Joel Gibb of The Hidden Cameras a sugarcoated pervert, and that pretty much sums it up ( http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/h/hidden-cameras/mississauga-goddam.shtml ) . Not that being sugarcoated or a pervert is bad, but it does get a bit tiring, and so does Mississauga Goddam . However, it is good enough to end up at number three this month.
Sometimes it's ok for an EP to do well. Though they are short, they sometimes pack a punch. The new High Dials EP, Fields In Glass , packs nothing but one good songremixed three times! Please give us a new album soon Mr. High Dials, this EP is not much of a filler.
fly pan amFinally, the top five ends with a new release from one of the original bands on the Constellation Records roster, Fly Pan Am . Although N'Ecoutez Pas tells us not to listen, listen. It is a well crafted piece of art that deserves the attentive ears of a real music fan. Some people think the Constellation releases get boring and repetitive, those people are wrong. There have been some odd choices out on the label lately, but all are works of detailed musicianship.
So last month I was soooooo right about The Sadies taking a big jump, but my god was I off about The Soiree . For next month we should all watch out for The Lines We Drew (plug plug for a local band) who now sit at number 135, The Doers will move up from number 103, and Frog Eyes, who currently sit at number 52, will definitely enter the top fifty.
True patriot love.
