Inside the ChartBy Bryndis OgmundsonNew Pornographers. Number one, again. Next. How come Sub Pop always steals away the fantastic Canadian bands? I mean, I loooooove Sub Pop, but why is it that our great Canadian acts always seem to do better once signed to Sub Pop? Why aren't our wicked Canadian labels scooping them up instead? Case in point, Wolf Parade is #2 with their full-length Apologies To The Queen Mary, as well as #47 with their self-titled EP. Both are on Sub Pop. Also, Chad VanGaalen 's Infiniheart was just reissued on Sub Pop, and it has re-entered the Top 50 at #35. Those Sub Poppers are incredibly intuitive about what Canadian bands are going to kick ass. Good for them. Why do the good ones go south?
Paper Bag Records is also kicking some serious record label ass lately. They just released two of the albums in the Top 5. The Deadly Snakes recently put out Porcella (#3), and their labelmates FemBots gave us This City (#4). Both are serious contenders for Top 10 lists of 2005 everywhere. Well, mine anyway. But wait! What's that at #17? Another Paper Bag Records album? Jesus, it is! Controller.Controller has just entered back on the scene with their new full-length, X-Amounts . I was so happy to see that Sigur Ros made it into the Top 50. Takk... made it to #14. I hope it goes even further. Gorgeous! Finally, I have one question for all of you... why the hell isn't Cage's new album, Hell's Winter , in the Top 50? Sure it's on the Top 10 Hip-Hop chart (#8), but come on, it's brilliant! It should definitely be in there. Next month, watch me try to make a cool holiday season mix cd. It's tough, most holiday music sucks. If you have a great holiday song you think we should all know about, email me (music@cfur.ca).
