!earshot year-end picks 2005

Geoffrey Wallang

Geoffrey Wallang (aka: Geoff-The Metal Pimp) co-host of Powerchord on CiTR 101.9fm,Vancouver,BC. I love whoring out Metal to unsuspecting 'clients'.

Top 3 records of the year
#1.Opeth-Ghost Reveries - (Roadrunner Records)
The one band that's not afraid to explore the boundaries of music and still be proud to be  more than your average Metal band...Opeth are...OPETH!A class/genre of their own!!!

#2.Between the Buried And Me - Alaska - (Victory Records)
Not a afraid to wear their influences on their sleeves yet remain unique at the same time.

#3.Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor - (Century Media Records): Year after year, they just keep upping the ante...no one can touch the guitar work of Jeff Loomis.

Honourable Mentions in no particular order:
Dark Tranquillity – Character - (Century Media)
Hypocrisy – Virus - (Nuclear Blast)
Strapping Young Lad – Alien - (Century Media)
Norma Jean - O God!The Aftermath - (SolidState)
Mors Principium Est - The Unborn - (Listenable)

Most under-rated record of the year
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing - (Lava)
These guys should be a household name by now. The production is top notch and the music is just so insanely good!!!!

Most over-rated record of the year
~Too many out there....

Best local release
Angel Grinder - Angel Grinder....
One of THE best Metal bands to come out of Vancouver since SYL.....The production is so bombastic, you'd think the album was recorded out in Europe where all the great Scandinavian Metal bands have been.

Best personal campus/community radio moment
Live phone interview w/ Christopher Malmstrom (Darkane/Non-Human Level) and Ryan Vanderpooyen (The Devin Townsend Band/Non-Human Level)

Record you are most anticipating for 2005
The Devin Townsend Band- Devin is a genius....always got tricks up his sleeves....
