Soundtracks: Movies, TV and Videogames

Rob Daniels has loved the music of film since chilhood

Seeing Star Wars for the first time when it came out in 1977 was a seminal cultural experience for many a young man of that generation. For Rob Daniels, the experience didn’t lead to a fascination with science fiction or a lucrative future career as a nerd, but instead left him with a lifelong passion for the music of film. That passion has found an expression in his life today in Visions in Sound, a program he hosts on Waterloo, Ontario’s CKMS 100.3FM.

Visions of Sound, created by Daniels six years ago, celebrated its 300th program just last month. “I love soundtrack music and it was a sector of the music industry that I felt wasn't getting the recognition it deserved,” he explains.

The program’s title captures the theme of the program perfectly since Daniels’ interest isn’t limited to just film but any media in which sound, music and visuals work together to create something I love soundtrack music... It is the heart and soul of a film larger and more powerful, including TV and videogames. Visions in Sound allows him to shine a light on often the under-appreciated importance of music in these media. “It expresses the underlying emotion in a film, TV show or videogame,” says Daniels. “It is the heart and soul of a film and people sometimes walk out of the theatre humming the theme, but few know the people behind that music and what goes into making it.”

Getting behind the music and its creation is a key focus of the program and interviews with film composers are a regular and important feature of the show. “I have spoken to some of the best-known Hollywood composers including Graeme Revell, Elliot Goldenthal, Howard Shore, Mychael Danna, Harry Gregson-Williams, Bear McCreary, Jamie Christopherson and many others.”

Visions in Sound airs on CKMS 100.3FM Waterloo each Friday afternoon from 3:20 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET and can be heard on line at http://ckmsfm.uwaterloo.ca.
