It's (A)Live - Really Live Radio

David Murray & the Gwo-Ka Masters
David Murray & the Gwo-Ka Masters
are one of many bands to do a live
set for It's (A)Live
Live music has been part of radio since the very beginning. In fact, at one time, almost all the music heard on radio was played live. Those days are long gone, but the live radio session is still a regular part of progressive radio and a number of campus/community stations have built programs around the idea of live musical performance.

It's (A)Live at Toronto's CIUT 89.5FM is luckier than most since it has a large recording studio with a 24 track mixer available right on site. Hosted by CIUT Program Manager Ken Stowar, It's (A)Live, features live recordings of local, regional, national, and some international musicians who perform from a wide variety of disciplines. Some of the bands Stowar has featured live sets from are Harry Manx, The Toronto Taiwanese Choir, David Murray & The Gwo-Ka Masters, Mr. Rick & The Biscuits, Swing Rosie, Afrodizz, Chet, Mika Bomb, Tumi & The Volume, Noisettes, Rizwan-Muazam Qawwali and Los Van Van. Not every live session is recorded in-house specifically for the show. Many are recorded straight from the mixing board at shows (with permission, of course) using a minidisk or Marantz 660 portable recording unit. Stowar also occasionally digs deep into the vaults of CIUT's extensive music library to fill out the program.

It's (A)live can be heard every Monday afternoon in the Greater Toronto area starting at 1pm EST or online at www.ciut.fm. Stowar hosts a second program at CIUT called Global Rhythms a weekly 3 hour world music program he started in 1989, heard Sundays from 3-6 PM EST.
