The Legend Of Bird's Hill
Intr_Version
Bryce Kushnier is referred to as a singer/songwriter, though his outfit Vitaminsforyou is a decidedly electronic act. Material such as The Ukranians, so Long Pleasant Bay and Wishing I Lived Near Water all have the feel of pop songs made electronically, with the focus on the melodies, and it's clear songcraft is important in the work. Still, there are so many sounds here, though, that it's hard to neatly label the whole record. There are some spacious, spinny, summery songs that bring Caribou to mind, but there's also swoopy, snitchy electro-glitch, weird little ditties like Being Away Fame, and oddly creepy tracks such as Everything is Always. Scattered throughout there are too many bits of music that seem arbitrary, however, such as telephone messages from various guests and friends (like Emm Gryner, whose actual song, It Is Always Raining In Dublin is a highlight). At times the album seems overlong, mostly because these scraps act as unintentional filler, but there is definitely enough here to warrant plowing through it all. Before you know it, you'll know which tracks to skip, and what remains unskipped is more than worthwhile.
