St. Catharines is Yummy

JL - The Yummy sound = something new and original. Kinda broad, but when I listen to new acts (whether it's the next Arcade Fire, or some garage band from Welland ), I turn my ear to something I've never heard before.  If I don't hear it, I move on.  I always give it a few listens, but I have to end up with a feeling of wanting to listen to it again.  I guess I can compare this to the first time I heard The Who, or Television, or Brian Eno, or Etc .... I genuinely have to respect the bands that are on Yummy Recordings, through their vision and passion.

!e - Briefly describe the artists on the label? What format does Yummy use to spread the gospel? (CD, CD-r, vinyl, electronic, cassette..)

FOTM
The Regards, from St Catharines, have
a new album coming out soon
JL - The artists on Yummy at the moment all remain pretty INDIE. They are tackling different styles within the guitar/bass/drums/keys dynamic. The Regards involve banjo in a pop friendly rock mode.  Readable Ink could be transcribed to an orchestra, but remain in a rock dynamic.   I knew we were making headway when Amanda Putz from CBC Radio One's Bandwidth claimed Yummy to be her favourite new indie label.  She has been a huge help with spreading the Yummy word, as well as campus/community radio, and great people like Earshot!.   Up until now, we have been releasing our albums on cd.  A new artist named Salty Eyes will be releasing his album primarily on tape.  I'm looking forward to that.  I miss tape.

!e - What has been the label's biggest highlight to date?

JL - One of the biggest highlights to date is Dr.Pee getting involved with some Yummy projects. He is best known for is work with The Dinner Is Ruined and Gord Downie's solo work.  He has been a huge help to us, and continues to be.  In relation to him, Dave Clark (also from The Dinner Is Ruined, Gord Downie, formally of the Rheostatics) has started to contribute to some future projects on the label.  I see great new things ahead.   Another highlight has been getting involved with www.zunior.com, an online label.  Dave Ullrich (formally of The Inbreds ) runs the label, and cares very deeply with its direction.  Yummy artists such as Palooka, The Regards, Readable Ink and Me (Joe Lapinski) are currently on the label.  You can find other bands like Wax Mannequin , Mike O'Neil , The Woodchoppers Association , Rheostatics, and many more on the label.

!e - What lies in store for the immediate future of Yummy?  New releases? New signings?  Exciting new projects?

FOTM
Garrett Lacroix was an early Yummy signing
JL - There is a tonne of new releases in the immediate future: Readable Ink, The Regards, Palooka, Bronx Cheerleader, The Hoa Hoa's, Joe Lapinski. Its going to be busy for the next 12 months, for sure.   Bronx Cheerleader is a new signing to the label.  Lead by Scott Warren .  He recorded the album in his bedroom, and I got to mix and master it.  One of my favourite albums of the year, honestly.   The Hoa Hoa's from Toronto are a new addition to Yummy as well.  I recorded them here at A-Frame, and I'm just about finished with the mix.  Great people, and they fed me well within my own home while they were here.  Life is good.   The Regards have recorded a new full-length here at A-Frame.  Should be out in the fall.  Beautiful songwriting, with haunting melodies.  A band of great songwriters .... What could go wrong?   Readable Ink is moving from Ottawa to Toronto in the next couple of months. We recorded an album sans drummer about 3 months ago.  While they were here to record, they met their future drummer. I've been recording his parts recently, and they fit perfectly.  This is the passion and love that Yummy is all about.

!e - What lies in store for the long-term future of the label?

JL - Some goals for Yummy:  Canadian distribution, more talent, a Yummy/Niagara music festival, morning fruit shakes.
