Bedroom Bliss

By Anne Sulikowski

5. What shapes your improvisations?

David: That really depends, especially whether I am playing alone or with others. In my own personal pursuits I try to create sounds without any emotional or human attachment. Whether or not that's successful, I'm unsure. Working in such a chaotic medium (feedback) it's difficult to predict or totally control the sound that is being generated and it is often the electronics that are shaping the sound itself and I have no idea what's going on. That's part of the appeal.

6. Would you call the music you create songs or sounds? Please explain.

David: It's just noise. Besides the repetition of loops and the general rhythm created by using delay effects, these sounds are devoid of any of the traditional structure so it's nothing like a song.

7. Tell me about your thoughts on the Canadian Experimental scene.

David: I'm not sure there is one... "Experimental" is a pretty subjective word and is often use out of context when describing a lot of music. There are a lot of incredible people in Canada making interesting music but the good stuff is usually somewhere below the radar, almost divorced from the scene.

8. What artists influence you musically?

David: I prefer to think in terms of being inspired by others rather than being influenced.

9. How do you currently record and write your music?

David: Too many perhaps. There have been 6 releases in the "Feedback" series, which is a continually growing heap of home recordings using feedback as the only source sound. 3 are out via other sources (Entr'acte in the UK, Trash Aesthetic in NewYork & Worthy Records in Hamilton). The other 3 were either self-released or put out through the label I run with my Offensive Orange bandmate, Middle James Co.
