5. Tell me about the challenges performing electronic music solo without the use of pre-recorded items.

Carrying the piles of gear. I'd always rather play to 5 people who were interested in what I was doing than a hundred who couldn't care less. Ha, the only real challenge is the amount of attention to detail it requires sampling everything live on the fly is a pretty delicate art especially when you don't have anyone else to hide behind if something doesn't go right.  The biggest challenge is balancing all the different sound levels and giving them the space they need to be properly heard.

6. What influences you musically? Who are some of your music favs.

I don't know if anything specific directly influences my music..  I get inspired when I listen to something that I like for certain but I don't think that I get inspired to do anything specific..   The albums that most inspired me when I first started doing electroluminescent were the last two Talk Talk records, Pygmalion by Slowdive and Steve Reich's Counterpoint pieces.


7. How open do you find the music scene in Canada.

I've been lucky enough to be exposed to mostly receptive audiences. I'm sure there's a lot of people out there that wouldn't give what I do a chance, but I don't think that would be exclusive to Canada.  I think that there's a great deal of potential here.. 

Ryan FergusonThe problem is that most areas of this country are too small to support the idea of individual 'scenes' there's just not enough people to have vibrant regional music communities based on very narrow Sampling everything live on the fly is a pretty delicate art, especially when you don't have anyone else to hide behind. parameters of a 'genre' or 'style'.  People too easily allow themselves to be filed or compartmentalized and that is completly contrary to any idea of a community.  There are many open minded people around the country who just want to experience something and if you're lucky enough to find them, the rest will either come along eventually or go their own way which is fine.  I'd always rather play to 5 people who were interested in what I was doing than a hundred who couldn't care less.

8. How do you go about recording your music?

Initially, quickly then VERY slowly.

9. How did you get your project name?

I saw it in an advertisement somewhere around the same time I was putting together the first cassette and thought it fit.

I still get nervous most of the time. When I first started to play solo shows I'd get it really bad, not so much stage fright as 'what will I do if something goes wrong' anxiety.
11. Do you ever plan to add any visual elements to electroluminescent?

Nothing planned. Though I would never rule anything out.  I like the idea of visuals, but it would have to be a very well thought out part of the show for me to go ahead with something.

12. Describe your music as three colors.

Red white and blue because it doesn't bleed. Although I've been known to draw blood whilst on stage a number of times.
