!earshot year-end picks 2005

Dale Kibbins

I be Dale Kibbins, host of The End of Silence on CJUM 101.5 in Winnipeg (UMFM).

Top 3 records of the year
William Elliott Whitmore - Ashes to Dust - (Southern)
Something new to me that got me wanting to dig a little deeper.  Awesome vocals.

Big Business - Head For The Shallow - (Hydra Head)
Driving, fist pumping rock!

Unsane - Blood Run - (Relapse)
See above.  Best one trick pony ever.

Most under-rated record of the year, and why
Married to Music - Sweet Kicking and Screaming
Not so much under-rated as unfortunately unknown.  Hooks n' riffs.

Best local release
I really dug the Volume demo/EP (volumetheband.com). Very different from previous works by the band (ranging for noise rock to a CD containing nothing but songs from the Spiderman cartoon), this release is a lot more radio friendly and reminds me a bit of Radiohead meets... I can't remember what the other band was.  Pretty fun and catchy light rock.

Best personal campus/community radio moment or experience of the year.
My pal DaveD from Grand Forks doing the show with me one night only to have Stephen Egerton of Descendents/ALL fame call in and discuss favorite Disney Princesses with us.  The popular vote went to Belle.

Record You Are Most Anticipating For 2006
The new KEN mode.  These boys know how to write a song.  This will also probably be the most under-rated album of 2006.  Don't let this happen!
