!earshot year-end picks 2005

Quentin Wright

Quentin Wright, host of "Chips With Everything" (British Pop music from all decades), CITR 101.9FM, Vancouver, BC.

Top 3 records of the year
Shitmat - Full English Breakfast - (Planet Mu)
Jason Forrest - Shamelessley Exciting - (Sonig)
Annie - DJ Kicks - (!K7)

Most under-rated record of the year
Cardiacs - Special Garage Concerts, Volumes 1 and 2 - (Alphabet)
Cardiacs have been terminally under-rated since the dawn of their career over two decades ago.  Despite many amazing albums they have never gained much of a profile outside of their fanatical cult.  These live albums showcase the most intense weirdness yet heard from them.

Most over-rated record of the year
Broadcast - Tender Buttons - totally disapointing.
Saint Etienne - Tales from Turnpike House - please fuck off now as you have turned into a parody of yourselves.
Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit - indistinguishable from the Pooh Sticks circa 1990.

Best local release
Hank Pine and Lily Fawn - The Road to New Orleans.
They are an amazingly talented multi-instrumental duo and I can hardly describe their music except to say that it's damn fresh.  On first listen this was a bit disappointing as it's seemed like really long rambling album. It still seems like a really long rambling album but it sure grows on you. An impressive achievement.

Best personal campus/community radio moment or experience.
Playing the whole of Sudden Sway's album Ko-Opera last Friday.

Record you are most anticipating for 2006
A new studio album from Cardiacs because it's been a long time.
Something new from Tipsy, because it's been a long time.
Anything from Wrong Records because I loves the 'ArdKore.
