!earshot year-end picks 2005

Ted Turner

Ted Turner CKUW 95.9 FM Winnipeg radio host & long time Staff Type.

Your Top 3 records of the year
1. Echo & The Bunnymen: Siberia (True North)
Their best record in 20 years, Lay Down Thy False Gods and Groove.

2. New Order: Waiting for The Siren's Call (Warner)
The return of the Elemental New Order - Loads of Sunshine and Sex.

3. Morrissey: Live At Earls Court (Attack)
Dorian Gray throws flowers...loudly!

Most under-rated record of the year
Cranes: Particles & Waves (Manifesto)
Beautiful as ever, did anyone notice?

Most over-rated record of the year,
Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary (Sub Pop)
Its a good record....& that¹s why its a little over-rated, or should I say...overplayed , you know...the can con thing.. Singer comes off as a natural new Iggy , great stuff really.

Best local release
Greg MacPherson Band: Night Flares (G7 Welcoming Committee)
A great Vulnerable Fist of a record!. His toughest and most naked work yet. More Rock & Roll fire burns from Greg alone with a guitar on stage than from most bands with 2 semis worth of gear behind them. When Greg & his band are fully ON (which is most nights) they are, in my opinion, the most powerful and compelling live band in the country, don¹t miss em.

Best personal campus/community radio moment
I heard the best Tawny The Brave (Thurs 4-6pm CST) set ever on CKUW...Host Dave B has been producing a top notch program for almost 8 years now...but this one week he had some extra special energy going on & he just kept riding it during this one set....i forget the exact sequence now...but at one specific point ( I think when he played a Jesus & Mary Chain song) I realized this was his best show ever....moments like that make you fall in love with c/c radio all over again.

Record you are most anticipating for 2006
Robert Pollard: From a Compound Eye (Merge) Because I Miss GBV
