Pandemic Pulse finds the World's beat

Nanaimo's Pandemic Pulse the music of the world
to your radio each week.

World Music these days may not be as high profile as it was just a few years ago when the likes of Peter Gabriel and David Byrne focused the music world’s attention on it, but that doesn’t means any less great music is coming out of the music hotbeds of Latin America, Africa and Asia. You can find plenty World Music on campus/community radio with shows such as Nanaimo, BC’s Pandemic Pulse on CHLY 101.7FM (Mondays, 4-6 PM, http://www.chly.ca/pandemic_pulse.php).

Host Nathalie Santema or Thalie presents Pandemic Pulse as “a pleasant place where you can listen to groovy beats from all over the globe: interesting, funky, and mind expanding.” She first decided to get into radio on the I'd rather play lots of music than come up with good lines. encouragement of a radio DJ friend in Europe who thought she had the personality and the extensive musical knowledge to do it. “I'm not sure about the personality part though, says Thalie, ‘I'd rather play lots of music on the airwaves than come up with good lines.” And so the emphasis is squarely on the music, where Pandemic Pulse promises “exhilarating global artists and beautiful beats that will leave you breathless.” Some recent favorites include Thomas Mapfumo’s Toi Toi and Techari’s Ojos de Brujo. Occasional special features, especially around important events and anniversaries, dig deeper into the music with programs focusing on a particular genre or the music of specific ethnic groups.

With a literal world of music out there, a single weekly show like Pandemic Pulse can’t hope to cover everything. You’ll want to seek out other world music shows available in your area or online like the ones listed below.
