Program Profile: Canada Post-rock

John Pantherbone has all the hot new releases right at his fingertips

Injuries are just part the job when
making skateboarding videos
Skateboards and music have been cultural soul mates for more than a couple of decades now such that whole genres can be thought of as skateboard music. Skater John Pantherbone’s show on CKXU 88.3FM in Lethbridge, Alberta isn’t all about skate music but he fits it into every show. “Every week I try to fit in one song that has been in a skateboard video and I give a bit of info on the context of the song being featured in the video and some info about the video.”

Pantherbone’s show, Canada Post-rock, airs on Saturday evenings 7:30-9:00PM MST (online at www.ckxu.com)  “It's not limited to post-rock and does include a lot of the new CDs that sometimes get glossed over by the DJ's here. I pretty much try to cover everything and anything from the new CD shelf.” As the music director at CKXU, he is in a good position to feature new music on his program. I pretty much try to cover everything and anything from the new CD shelf Part of his job is to review all the new CDs arriving at the station each week. A few recent releases have particularly caught his attention. “When I get overwhelmed with all the new CDs coming in I just take a break and grab these from the CKXU library: Julie Doiron, Twilight Sad, Do Make Say Think, Jesu, The Winks, and those Eccentric Soul compilations.”

Outside of his radio work, Pantherbone is interested in multimedia and video work. “I think it would cool to go on tour with a band to make a tour DVD.”  And the rest of his time? That’s easy he says, “Skateboarding and lots of it. Also making skate videos is pretty fun, I've made a couple of those.”

Here are a few more shows across the land were you can hear some fresh new tunes. Some of these programs are also available as podcasts.
