Programmer Profile - Jazz on the Rocks: Shelley G

Jazz has become a life passion for Shelley G

By Magnus Thyvold

Shelley G
Everybody likes a good cocktail reference when it comes to jazz. It might be Straight, No Chaser or in the case of Shelley Gummeson’s program on CFBX in Kamloops, Jazz on the Rocks (92.5 FM the X, online at www.theX.ca, Friday 5P.M. to 7 P.M.).

Like many jazz fans these days, Gummeson’s definition of jazz is pretty loose. She describes the show “basically as Jazz, Funk, Soul format or anything I find jazz-like.” This view is pretty common nowadays (just look at the line-up of any jazz festival), if not always popular with purists. “I love the older stuff that really swings, bops, slips. I love the new stuff that respects tradition but is not afraid to mess around a bit,” she explains. Interviews, profiles and occasional live guests make up a regular part of her Do you mean aside from planning and implementing an all out, jazzed up, funked out, soulful, sonic attack on unsuspecting listening public? show along with info on local events and concerts. You can read some of her recent interviews with Rebecca Jenkins, God Make Me Funky and Shane Philip at www.earshot-online.com/shelleyg. Like many committed fans, her love of music, and jazz in particular, has become a big, big part of her life and the radio show and the writing and interviewing allows her to get more engaged with the music. When asked what she is doing with the rest of her life she jokes, “do you mean aside from planning and implementing an all out, jazzed up, funked out, soulful, sonic attack on unsuspecting listening public?”  For almost six years she has been sharing that kind of enthusiasm with jazz fans in Kamloops and further a field online. You could say that when it comes to jazz, Shelley G has been shaken and stirred.
