Programmer Profile - SLEIZURE and Bass Behavior Radio

There's lots of electronic music on campus radio

Listening to the radio isn’t quite the same thing as going to a club. But if you love club music, or more broadly speaking electronic music you can find lots of it on community radio stations across Canada. In fact, if you tune in late on a Friday or Saturday night there is a good chance that’s what you’ll hear. Like SLEIZURE on CJSF 90.1 FM in Vancouver (Friday nights, 1 A.M. to 4 A.M PT, www.cjsf.ca) or Bass Behavior Radio  on Winnipeg’s UMFM 101.5FM  (Friday 11 P.M. to 12 A.M.CT, www.umfm.com). Dave Conroy on SLEIZURE, (“combining the elements of sleaze, leisure and seizure”) focuses on some of the more obscure genres of electronic music – “hard weird, noisy, droney – different” as Both shows sweep away some of the anonymity of electronic music he describes it. DJs N-Deep and Coda on Bass Behavior Radio offer up a mix of upfront house, garage and dubstep. Without a live crowd that needs to be kept moving both shows can provide a bit of background (over the beat, of course) and sweep away some of the anonymity of electronic music. Conroy showcases genres, labels and artists, particularly those from France and the Czech Republic that have been catching his interest lately, while Bass Behavior has occasional local and international guest DJs and a regular rundown of upcoming events in the scene.

“Latenight radio is always a gong show” says Conroy. Playing for the radio gives both shows a lot of freedom but you still need the discipline of the crowd. To keep sharp, N-Deep has a residency at Housed@NV in Winnipeg while Conroy throws free parties in public places. You can catch both shows online and visit SLEIZURE at www.sleizure.ca
