Urban is a State of Mind : Droppin' Science and the Mix

Sometimes it's better when you have to try harder

Lethbridge isn’t exactly known as a hotbed of urban culture. It’s a small town in Alberta, after all. But committed music fans are found everywhere and sometimes when you have to try a little harder, the passion runs a little deeper. That’s the story with a couple of great hip hop shows on Lethbridge’s campus station CKXU 88.1FM.

There’s nothing in this music and culture that doesn’t get me excited.
- DJ Booda

Droppin’ Science with DJ Booda and The Mix with DJ Daemon spin a mix of underground hip hop and old school every Tuesday night. Each show has it’s individual flavour, with Science (7:30 P.M to 9 P.M. MT) mixing in funk and soul, while the Mix (10:30 P.M.- 12 A.M. MT) adds in the tricksters of turntablism. If that’s not enough hip hop for you, sandwiched in between is another 90 minutes of beats with Oborn'n the Norm. That’s 4½ solid hours of hip hop.

For DJ Booda the radio show is a respite from the more conservative fare he has to spin as a DJ in city nightclubs. “After playing so much of the ‘mainstream’ pop and hip hop, it is such a release to play some real hip hop and to have that freedom to express your love for the type of music you want to listen to!” For Daemon, there’s nothing he’d rather be doing; “I spend way too much time on my turntables...there’s nothing in this music and culture that doesn’t get me excited.”  Whenever possible, Booda and Daemon try to incorporate interviews into their programs and have talked to the likes of Moka Only, Choclair, Brockway Biggs, Q-Bert, Red 1, Sweatshop Union and more. They are both trying a little harder and the listeners are the winners.
