The Swyves ( )

The Swyves
Blocks Recording Club ( http://www.blocksblocksblocks.com )

The Swyves are a trio who continually put the ‘free’ in ‘free jazz’ on their self-titled debut recording. All nine of the improvised performances were recorded live in the studio and are presented unabridged for maximum freshness. The acoustic fidelity is crisp, aside from the same old problem that plagues most live jazz recordings: the horns are too loud compared to the bass.

Led by reed player Jay Hay (tenor & alto sax, bass clarinet), fresh ideas overflow at every turn, from subtle abstraction to spastic explosion. Think middle-of-the-road. Okay, now think opposite of that. Jay and bandmates Dan Gaucher (drums & percussion) and Aaron Lumley (acoustic bass) have expanded their expressive comfort zones to include the far reaches of tonality, timbre and rhythm. Their collective palette of expression is dynamic, entertaining, fun, and sparkling with energy. Trying to choose a standout track is futile – they’re all good! See them live if you get a chance.
