5 of 13 <Back | Next>

Arcade Fire Maddee Gee
hosts The Main Event at CFRU 93.3 FM, www.cfru.ca, University Of Guelph, Ontario, Canada Sunday nights 8pm 10pm.
Nothing But Hip Hop And Classicks!

Best of 2004

Jaylib - Champion Sound - Stones Throw

Because it embraces all the true elements of hip hop culture. Solid beats, truthful image and an all round tight production package.

Pete Rock - Soul Survivor 2 - Rapster

Once again super tight production, great collaborations and a true b-boy stance.

Jay-Z & 9 th Wonder The Black Album (9 th Wonder Remix) - White Label

Truly a great combination of beats and lyrics. Nobody can top Jay-Z lyrically but his tracks are somewhat glitzy. 9 th Wonder remedies that with a dose of crunchy street beats.

Most Under-Rated Record of the Year

Murs Murs 316 The 9 th Edition (Definitive Jux) Once again I don't think 9 th Wonder isn't getting his due. When you can collaborate with a range of artists like Jay-Z and a cat like Murs . You gotta give it up! This album gets much rotation on my decks. No doubt!

Most Over-Rated Record of the Year

Madvillain Madvillainy - Stones Throw It really hurts me to say this because I love Madlib and MF Doom so much but the album was very lackluster at times. Some of the beats were amateur at best and if it weren't for MF Doom's flow the whole thing would have been a disaster. I don't think Madlib or MF Doom thought this album would be so big and I think they were a victim of heavy marketing.

Best Local Release - Guelph

Frac & Pro Relevance - Street Logic

Fraction and Prologic have been leaders in the Kitchener/Waterloo hip hop scene for many years. Both have been working and performing for nearly 10 years each. The production is top notch and the lyrics are both true to life and original. Fraction and Prologic compliment each other with wordplay and delivery. This alongside top notch beats makes this the Best Local Release and almost made the Most Underrated Album had it got the proper marketing and push.

Most Anticipated Record of the Year

This is a tough one. I know that there will be a lot of material coming from the previously mentioned artists that I will definitely be amped for but I think the material I most anticipate will be from the local cats in the Kitchener/Waterloo and Guelph and surrounding areas. There will be new releases from Prologic and from upstarts like Optikz and the legendary Noah23. Stay tuned ..

Best Personal Campus/Community Radio Moment Or Experience Of the Year

Without a doubt the best experiences happened in the early months of 2004 when DMS joined forces with the Main Event for our 2 hour, 4 turntable hip hop throw downs. The mixes were improvisational, the atmosphere was free and fun and the responses were incredible. Look out for more 4 turntable action in 2005! Guaranteed not to disappoint!
