Jesse Matthewson

Jesse Matthewson, Thick & Friendly Radio, KenMODE

UMFM (CJUM) 101.5 FM, Winnipeg, 11 pm CT (12 am ET) Monday night.

Largely a music show with alienating comedy bits peppered throughout. Focusing on the artistic side of aggressive music, generally speaking.

I also play in KEN mode and co-run MKM Management Services Ltd.

My Top 10 records of the year

White LungParadise - (Domino)
At first the production bugged me a bit as it was more glossy than their previous records, then the hooks caught me like so much Manitoban pickerel.

Bunuel - A Resting Place For Strangers - (Tannen Records)
A savage noise rock outing fronted by the mad genius frontman of Oxbow.

Pill - "Convenience" - (Mexican Summer)
Sax laden art noise rock. Was exactly what I wanted out of late summer.

Carly Rae Jepsen - Emotion Side B - (604/School Boy/Interscope)
This was worth it for ‘Higher’ alone. My favourite kind of audio ice cream.

Descendents - Hypercaffium Spazzinate - (Epitaph)
The kings of pop punk return to show everyone just how pointless every other band playing within this genre is.

AegesWeightless - (Another Century/Century Media)
This is what hard rock is supposed to be.

StickersJoy - (Independent)
I got this record at the same time as I got the Pill one, and it scratched the same itch. Some of the riffs on this one make me feel drunk.

Greys - Outer Heaven - (Buzz/Carpark)
It didn’t catch me immediately, but upon repetition the hooks came alive and I found myself humming all of the songs throughout the summer.

Mint Julep - Broken Devotion - (Unessn Music)
I had this put in a folder in my iTunes titled “listen to this” and ignored it for months. It later became my slow jam for the office.

Shearwater - Jet Plane And Oxbow - (Sub Pop)
I know they’re not from here, but this record feels like the prairies to me.

@ShearwaterBand

Best local release

Tunic -Disappointment EP – (Public Tone)

Tunic seems to be the next hope for a city with a rich history in noise rock, whether they grew up with that scene or not. A bunch of indie rock guys who faced a quarter life crisis by getting ugly and noisy. I’ll take it!

Best live show you saw this year

Gorguts/Intronaut/Brain Tentacles in Winnipeg on Thanksgiving. The first time the masters have ever come through the prairies, and they did not disappoint. I’d seen them a few times before, but this performance may have been my favourite to date. Gorguts were the new school of death metal 20 years before it even became the new school, and they remain the masters to this day.

Most under-rated record of the year

Bunuel - A Resting Place For Strangers - (Tannen Records)
Hands down. I can’t believe how few people care about this record.

Best personal campus/community radio moment or experience of the year

Returning to the airwaves after a 5-year absence.
