The Constantines ( )

Shine A Light
Sub Pop ( http://www.subpop.com/ @subpop )
Shine a light on everything that these young lions have accomplished in their short short explosive upbringing into the upper echelons of post-punk Canadian musical literature. If you don’t know who the Constantines are, do the research yourself. These guys are the stuff of indy legend blazing a trail from Guelph to Toronto to the rest of North America in a very short period of time. The Constantines are straight-up one of the most important bands in Canada today. Check them out live & see for yourself. The record opens with new version the song “National Hum, which originally appeared on the bands 1999 demo cassette that got passed around and around and around. The urgency of this song and the utter “giving it your all groan in the lead vocals sends chills up your spine as lead singer Bry Webb belts out “more and more neglected hands judgement ripe they’re starting bands. This lesson in chugg a lugg lugg punk-pop fury leads into the pummeling track “Shine a Light which bemoans the listener, “don’t talk to me about simple things there’s no such thing. This song also showcases the sound of the new 5th Con, keyboardist Will Kidman. His organic organ sound is the flame in the background of every song on this recording. It burns bright, flickers and wavers from time to time, but never burns out. Shine a Light is a bullet proof recording that stands up to repeated repeated and repeated listens. I dare even long-time supporters of the band who might cringe at some of the more accessible songs on this release to not admit that they have caught themselves humming the catchy as hell chorus of “On to you at one time or another. And “Tank Commander (Hung Up in a Warehouse Town) has got the be the most appropriate anthem for any late tear, “Howling at the moon through the dark unforgiving alleys of whatever big love/hate metropolis you live closest to. There are far too many memorable moments on this record to dissect in this review, but I could go on and on. This record also has a horn section buried in the mix and did I fail to mention that it is also released through Sub Pop records everywhere but in Canada? Not that it even matters. Do yourself a favour, don’t believe the hype, experience it for yourself. Recommended, now.
