Much like its members, MixHell's first full-length release hardly fits into neat genre categories. The project of Iggor Cavalera, former drummer for Brazilian metal group Sepultura, and wife Laima Leyton, MixHell use their debut as an avenue to combine tropical disco beats with a rock edge, creating an energetic hybrid of space-age dance. Spaces begins with the upbeat “Antigalactic”, a track seemingly created for an aerobics class on Mars. Following the energetic opener, “Exit Wound” explores Cavalera's darker roots, with vocals provided by Greg Puciato of Dillinger Escape Plan. Later tracks “Mind Drop”, “The Edge” and “Once Again” evoke the throbbing grime of seedy clubs, all pulsing beats and robotic female vocals. Closer “Come With Me” ends the affair on a melancholy note, recalling the eternal regret of the morning after. Cavalera's percussion stands out on Spaces, a unique album guaranteed to make both aliens and humans alike get down and groove.
